Review:

On May 2, 2006, Alejandro Escovedo released his first studio recording since being diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2002. Having survived the nearly fatal disease, Escovedo's latest release is a personal document about survival entitled The Boxing Mirror. Produced by John Cale of The Velvet Underground, the release holds much promise, including the upbeat rocker "Break This Time" and the solemn "Died a Little Today." Unfortunately, those powerful and strongly autobiographical songs are two of the few highlights of this release.  The Boxing Mirror is strong on lyrical content, but a bit weak on melody. Despite the personal and emotional backdrop to this recording (or maybe because of it), the release simply lacks the "listen-ability" of Escovedo's prior releases. Nevertheless, Escovedo remains one of our favorite alt-country artists and we are thrilled to see him releasing new material and hitting the road again.
