On March 7, 2006,
The Little Willies released their self-titled debut CD. The
group's most notable member is jazz-pop sensation Norah Jones.
Despite her pop success, The Little Willies is not Jones' first
foray into country music. Jones' Grammy winning debut album
featured a cover of Hank Williams' "Cold Cold Heart."
For her follow-up release Feels Like Home, Jones' moved
even closer to country music with the assistance of Levon Helm
and Garth Hudson from The Band, and especially Dolly Parton on
the bluegrass-oriented "Creepin' In." Also see
Jones' wonderful rendition of Gram Parsons' "She"
on the Parsons' CD/DVD tribute Return to Sin City.
With her country
roots established, Jones' takes the full country music plunge on
The Little Willies. Joined by a collection of musical
friends, this is the first CD from the group which previously
served as an occasional side project for its various members.
Recorded in 3 days in the home studio built by bassist Lee
Alexander in Manhattan, the release is a enjoyable listen from
beginning to end.
In case you were
wondering, the group takes its name from Willie Nelson whose
songs formed the initial repertoire of the group. Several
of those Nelson covers appear on this release - including "Gotta
Get Drunk" and "Night Life." Among the
other artists whose songs are featured on the album are Hank
Williams, Bob Willis, Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons and
Townes Van Zandt. It's tough to miss with musical sources like
that.
