Grammys Add Cajun/Zydeco Category
Variety
reports that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences
(the Grammys) has decided to add two new categories including a
specific category for best cajun or zydeco music album. The new
category will be added to the folk music section of the
organization. This addition follows on the heels of last year's
decision to rename the "Contemporary Folk" category as the
"Contemporary Folk / Americana" category.
A
few months back we reviewed the history
of Americana and the Grammys. We noted that cajun and zydeco
music have been prominently featured within the "Best
Traditional Folk Recording" category. By creating a specific
category for cajun and zydeco, the future of the traditional folk
category is somewhat uncertain.
After
years of ignoring American "folk" music, the Grammys'
recent actions in this area reflect a renewed interest in
traditional Americana and a desire to give these respective musical
genres the respect they deserve.
